[Cross Country] Cross Country Teams Have Solid Start to 2015

Reinhardt's cross country teams performed well at the Dalton State Invitational Friday evening, with the men's squad finishing fourth in the 6k event and the women taking home a sixth place finish in the 4k at Prater's Mill in Dalton, Ga.

On the men's side, Roger Herrera set the program record for a 6,000-meter event with a time of 20:52. Alex Garcia posted a time of 21:23, with Jackson Helfrich finishing between Herrera and Garcia to post RU's second-best time. Nathan Trottier's first collegiate race saw the freshman finish with RU's fourth-best time (22:09). Alex York was fifth (22:37), with Austin Brennan and and Justin Pirkle also recording times in Reinhardt's top 7.

The Eagles finished just behind a pair of schools receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25, as William Carey finished in third, eight points ahead of the Eagles while conference foe Bryan placed second (66).

On the women's side, freshman Savannah Rice started her career by placing eighth overall in the meet and by setting a new program record for fastest time in the 4,000-meters with a time of 17:32. Freshman Melanie Gerdes also had a solid start to her career with a time of 18:40 for RU's second-best time. Next was Jazzmine Gonzalez with a 19:08, with Anna Mills next (20:34) and Ansley Avera posting RU's fifth time (20:52). Just behind were Shelby Bennett (20:55) and Cameron Hawkins (21:34).

RU's cross country teams will next compete Sept. 19 at the North Georgia Invitational.
